Chasing God with three flat tires

My dad and I were looking around in a Christian bookstore many years ago. I noticed a bible study called “Chasing God with Three Flat Tires.” I commented that I could relate to that title, which was how I felt. My dad blankly stated, “Then you aren’t chasing God.”

It took me many years to internalize what he meant by that statement. But let’s break it down in the simplest terms. You are not going anywhere if your car has three flat tires. You are stuck essentially, not moving, and the one donut you have in the trunk isn’t going to help either.

So, are you chasing God with three flat tires? Here are some questions to help you figure it out:

  1. Are you praying every day?
  2. Are you reading the Bible, not just a devotional?
  3. Are you asking God for guidance in your everyday life?

If you cannot say you are doing these things, especially the first two. You may be attempting to chase God with three flat tires.

We are all busy with jobs, family, health, etc. But we must remember that our relationship with God is critically important and must always be worked on. I try to remember that my relationship with God should be nurtured like any other. How do you spend time with God and nurture that relationship? By focusing on the three things above to start with.

  1. Prayer
  2. Bible reading

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalms 119:105

What better way to get to know God than by reading his word. God’s word is alive and active in our lives if we are willing. The Bible tells us that His word never returns void. By reading the Bible, you are opening a line of communication between you and God that moves beyond prayer. You are not only communicating with God; if you listen, you are allowing God to speak directly to you through his word.

  1. Guidance
  2. Support
  3. Love
  4. Grace
  5. Mercy
  6. Encouragement
  7. and so much more

We are all busy, and life gets in the way of our best intentions. I hope and pray that you will be encouraged and motivated by this short series I am working on so that you will not feel like you are chasing God with three flat tires.
